SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000 EPISODE 2... THOUSAND!

WHAT'S HAPPENING???

WOOO I will tell you what is happening! It is the return of The Surfphony of Derstruction 2000! I'm here again to bring you EPISODE TWO.... THOUSAND!!! It's been a busy month here in Hell City but that doesn't mean you're gonna lose out on some Surf from around the Earth! Every full moon, when the tide is high, the BIG SURF will be here to help you hang ten!

DIG IT here's a playlist for your perusal!

Set 1 - Dirty Copz

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Good Cop Bad Cop
Davie Allan & The Arrows - Rumble
Huevos Rancheros - Smartbomb
The Ramblin' Ambassadors - Speed Wobble

Set 2 - STOMP!

Los Straitjackets - Galaxy Drive

Set 3 - Miser-WOOOOO!

The Jades - Surfin' Crow
Southern Culture on The Skids - Meximelt
Bobby Fuller 4 - Misirlou

So, if you didn't catch my previous preview post about Dick Dale's Misirlou, then I highly suggest checking it out. What are ya waitin' for, ya chump?! I want ya to listen to the podcast so rather than dump all the neat facts about Misirlou here, why don't you download the episode and let the Doctor of Surf teach ya a little something!

I mentioned that I had consulted a fantastic book about the history of Surf music by Kent Crowley, Surf Beat: Rock'n'Roll's Forgotten Revolution, for some info about Dick Dale. If you wanna check that book out for yerself, hit up the Amazon link right over here. It's only fifteen bucks Canadian so that's not bad at all! I highly recommend this book. Obvious revelation, I know, but if you're at all interested in the Surf music scene and Wikipedia isn't doing it for ya, then GET THIS BOOK. It's hella in-depth and there's so much good information about all sorts of Surf bands, eras, styles, and what-have-you. The author, Kent Crowley, grew up in the scene, he was there man, and he definitely knows his stuff. It's really interesting to read about the evolution of Surf, from Dick Dale's audial simulation of surfin' to The Beach Boys and their vocal harmony stuff. It's cool, man, real KOOL.

If ya want a little sample, then check out this neat interview with Kent Crowley by the folks over at Book Club Live. Crowley talks a bit about how the technology came about, what Surf music meant, and a few neat anecdotes like how he was taught guitar by Norman Sanders of The Tornadoes.

Now, I'm always one to play Canadian Surf on the Surfphony. Ya gotta show some love for the Canucks and there is some great music coming out of The Great White North when it comes to Surf. From all over the nation, we have The Ramblin' Ambassadors, who released their latest album, Ramble On, in March 2012. You can check out the Bandcamp page and purchase the album there. We also have The High Tides and Luau or Die! rockin' the Toronto scene something fierce!

There's one classic Surf band outta Quebec that I really dig and that is Les Jaguars. They were out in the scene from around '62 to '64 doing some Shadows-style Surf. I played the track, Guitare Jet, on Episode 2 and if you wanna catch it on Youtube and send it to all yer friends then here ya go!

OH BY THE WAY, I'm making a special guest appearance "LIVE VIA SATELLITE" on REVOLUTION ROCK with my good friend Dave Konstantino, of The Hypnotics. If yer in the Windsor-Detroit area, you can catch Revolution SURF by tuning your radio to CJAM 99.1 FM at 10:30 EST! BIG DAVE is gonna play some Surf as well as I am gonna drop a few nuggets on ya! If you aren't in the Windsor-Detroit area, you can tune in online at www.CJAM.ca. CJAM is kind enough to offer downloads to every show so I will make sure to provide a link to Revolution Surf afterwards.

That's enough Surf for now! I'll catch ya on the flipside come next full moon!

I'm gonna give you a sneak preview of what's coming up for the next episode of DA BIG SURF! Howzabout a little bit of THE KING OF SURF GUITAR, DICK DALE!

(The awkward looking fella playing the bass kinda looks like me when I'm wearing my old specs.)
